The AgriCULTURE! Symposium is an interactive panel discussion for exploring how connections between culture and agriculture take shape in Abbotsford. After the panel discussion, attendees are welcome to remain on campus to enjoy a number of additional Symposium components, including exploration of Dr. Superle’s Food Museum, a scavenger hunt, and more.
During this event, attendees will be immersed in one of the core principles at play in the world of food and farming: “Cultural identity and sense of place are often closely tied to landscapes and food systems”—a principle so crucial that it’s enshrined in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s principles and policies.* Abbotsford food and farming folks who help bring you delicious things to eat will share their perspectives on this element of human life that we all experience daily—often without thinking about or even realizing it.

Event Details
A Welcome Day event on September 19th will celebrate newcomers from around the world who now call Abbotsford home. Community members are invited to join this year’s public welcoming ceremony hosted by Archway Community Service in collaboration with the City of Abbotsford.
The event is part of the national Welcoming Week, which is a movement to bring communities and neighbours of all nationalities together to strengthen shared belonging and foster a sense of unity within our community.
“Whether you are new to Canada or are looking to support your neighbours, we invite you to attend,” said Amy Van Bergen, event organizer. “Events like this show what makes our city a community.”
There will be greetings from local officials followed by a keynote speech from community champion Kanta Naik, who brings her own experience immigrating to Canada and supporting newcomer communities in Abbotsford for decades. Attendees
can learn about local community resources at the service fair and enjoy light refreshments.
“Diversity is one of Abbotsford’s greatest strengths and newcomers have long played a vital role in shaping and adding to the vibrant culture of our community,” said Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens. “Coming to a new place can be an adventure, but it can also be challenging. With the support of Archway Community Services and its partners we hope all newcomers and longtime residents feel equally welcome in Abbotsford and can enjoy all our community has to offer.”
The Welcome Day event will be held on Thursday, September 19th at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium
with doors opening at 6: 0[AV1] . Please register for this free event at Archway.ca/Welcome.

Event Details
The Abbotsford Farm & Country Market was established in 2003 and is operated by the non-profit Abbotsford Farm & Country Market Society.
It combines the best of a modern market experience with a traditional “make, bake, or grow” principle for its juried vendors. As a result, the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market showcases the best in locally grown and produced products along with the creative talents of both artisans and entertainers.
The majority of vendors are growers and food producers from the Abbotsford area. Agri-related businesses generate more than one third of Abbotsford’s economic activity and are responsible for 20% of all local jobs.
Buying local food contributes to a healthier environment by sustaining oxygen producing plants, and reducing greenhouse gases from packaging and long-distance transportation. In addition, local food is fresher, naturally ripened and therefore a healthier choice for you and your family.
By shopping at the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market, you are supporting the health of your loved ones, the environment, and the local economy; and are helping to sustain the availability of local food for future generations.
Learn more about local agriculture and local food by meeting local farmers and food producers at the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market each week.

After years of struggling with depression, anxiety and PTSD following his father’s suicide in 2013, Brook Morrison, at the age of 26, also passed away from suicide in September of 2020. Brook used to throw amazing Hawaiian shirt parties for his friends, complete with a jello shot salute, so the theme of this annual event is in his honour and meant to be a fun celebration to raise funds & awareness for BeMorr Society.
The first annual Hawaiian Shirt Gala took place at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre in September 2022. Our second annual Gala was held at Hillside Events at the Ledgeview Golf Club in October 2023. Both years the Gala featured a 3-course meal, entertainment, auction, and more. Last year’s Gala was hosted by Happie Poonian and included a welcome from Mayor Ross Siemens, epic entertainment from Sheyanne Sundahl, Steve Halfnights, Aftershock Roadshow as well as a special guest video from Baywatch star, Jeremy Jackson. Fundraising efforts included a silent auction, a 50/50, and a raffle for a four-night stay at Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii along with a roundtrip flight for two to any regularly scheduled and marketed WestJet destination.
Taking place at the Ledgeview Golf Club, Abbotsford, our third annual event will build off the last two year’s success, and offers an amazing opportunity to show your support for mental health and wellness by connecting with the BeMorr Society – while having a good time!

Local Mother-Daughter filmmakers, Kim Laureen and Megan Nicole (Fresh Independence
Productions) are set to release their third feature length documentary this fall called, “Losing
Coach Mac” based on BC Football Hall of Fame inductee and Father of Abbotsford Football,
Dr. Bill MacGregor.
BC Football Hall of Fame Inductee Bill MacGregor enjoyed a successful career with the
Vancouver Meralomas, SFU Clan, and was a 1973 BC Lions Draft Pick.
He then stepped into his favourite role as Coach Mac, building football programs like the
Abbotsford Panthers who not only lifted up a trophy, but also their community. Bill earned his
Masters and Doctorate in Education where as a high school principal the impact he had on
youth lasted a lifetime.
Along the way were unexplained changes until Bill’s diagnosis with CTE and Dementia.
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy known as CTE is coming to light as a neurodegenerative
disease caused by repetitive brain injury. More research is required for early diagnosis and
treatments to slow down the effects.
This is a story celebrating strength through adversity and all that Coach Mac has gifted to
people, but also a reflection about what has been taken away from his family – who share
heartbreak and loss in not knowing what was taking place.
Bill now spends his days with wife Pam who says, ‘No matter where we go former students,
players, parents, and colleagues stop to say hello and share a story about how Bill has
touches their lives.’
The title, ‘Losing Coach Mac’ was inspired by Pam who has shared her talents with the
community as a former realtor and now a custom cookie designer. The MacGregor’s have
offered their story to raise awareness about Brain Injury and the struggles families are facing
navigating the challenging road with Dementia.

ABOUT SILVEBROOK FARMS
Silverbrook has been servicing Abbotsford with this beautiful site for people to come and catch a fish for approximately 50 years. We love this long-lasting tradition and want to not only keep it alive, but improve on what was started here. Look below to see some of our improvements and info on what is to come!
Hi everyone! My name is Glenn, the new owner of Silverbrook Farm Inc. I am very excited to have the opportunity to carry on this long-lasting tradition of U-catch in Abbotsford. I caught my very first fish at Silverbrook with my grandpa and brother when I was 4 years old. Check the picture!
I hope to help facilitate some of these cherished memories to more families. I grew up locally (Cloverdale) and spent most of my summers at my Grandparent’s cabin in Point Roberts. Cabin life helped me fall in love with playing in the dirt, climbing trees, catching crabs/fish in the ocean and I naturally developed a love for the outdoors.
When school ended I spent a couple of summers forest firefighting before finding a career as an arborist. After 6 enjoyable years of climbing trees for a living, I decided it was time to switch to a different outdoor type business and I landed here. I look forward to helping the community find a convenient way to connect to the outdoors. I am of course speaking about the kids, but people of all ages sometimes need a reminder of just how good a day outside can be. Now that you know a bit more about me, I hope to learn a bit more about you.
Come by the farm and say hi!

This family-friendly performance is inspired the our award-winning children’s book Semá:th X̱ó:tsa: Sts’ólemeqwelh Sx̱ó:tsa / Great-Gramma’s Lake.
These special, FREE performances are in honor of Truth & Reconciliation, and are part of the larger Stetís ímexstowx Gathering on September 30th between 10am-3pm in Abbotsford’s Civic Plaza.
Performance Times: 11:45am & 2:15pm at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium
Working with professional puppeteer Tamara Unroe, Indigenous Education, and drama educator Ana Horner, students from Abbotsford School District immersed themselves in the story of Semá:th X̱ó:tsa (Sumas Lake) to develop this spectacular performance. The students bring to life three larger-than-life illuminated puppets based on more-than human beings that would have once lived in and around the lake.
Mentors: Tamara Unroe & Ana Horner
Puppet design by Tamara Unroe, Randi Edmundson and Jaqui Rolston.
Based on the book Semá:th X̱ó:tsa Sts’ólemeqwelh Sx̱ó:tsa / Great-Gramma’s Lake by Thetáx Chris Silver, Xémontélót Carrielynn Victor, Kris Foulds, and Laura Schneider.

ABOUT TAVES FAMILY FARM & TAVES ESTATE CIDERY
Farming has been a way of life for the Taves family since the 1930s, when Opa purchased his first farm in the Southlands of Abbotsford. Going into the fourth generation, Taves Family Farms continues to thrive with Loren and Corinne Taves leading the way. The farming operation now grows over 60 acres of produce where they harvest everything from eggplant and heirloom tomatoes, to a variety of currants and berries to apples and pumpkins!
Each spring, summer and fall, the Taves welcome people to the Applebarn to enjoy Easterfest, u-pick goji berries, sunflower and pumpkin patches, hay rides, a corn maze, jumping pillows, farm animals, pedal karts, pony rides, fun eats, and, most importantly, u-pick apples! Visiting the farm in fall brings 10 acres of orchard laden with different varieties of apples from tart Alkmene to sweet Honeycrisp and the Taves’ signature apple, the Jonagold. Together, this combination yields the most delicious cold-pressed apple cider and legendary apple cider slushies.

Event Details

Last years Gala was hosted by Happie Poonian and included a welcome from Mayor Ross Siemens, epic entertainment from Sheyanne Sundahl, Steve Halfnights, Aftershock Roadshow as well as a special guest video from Baywatch star, Jeremy Jackson.

Plus, enjoy stage shows and a special screening of Ratatouille—7pm on
Friday and 11am on Saturday—all for just $5!
With free entry and parking, joining the fun is a breeze. Come
for the food, stay for the great company, and leave knowing that your donations
helped make a difference. While food sales cover costs, your contributions
support vital MCC projects helping those in need worldwide. Check
out the food menu here.
