In 2019, a small group of Métis and First Nations women met and began a weekly inclusive singing and hand drumming circle. Instructor Wenonah Justin member of Cook’s Ferry of the Nlaka’pamux nation with Cree ancestry is a traditional singer, Knowledge Sharer and Drum Carrier. She shares the traditional Salish teachings she learned from Salish Elders in Tiqilip Community Singers.
In the pursuit of helping themselves and others reclaim a culture that was denied to them, D.R.U.M.C. practices Love, Unity, Inclusivity, Acceptance, Indigenous languages, Stories, and Songs.
We will be gathering on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Stó:lō People. Specifically Semá:th (Sumas), Mathexwi (Matsqui), and Laq’ámel (Mission) First Nations. This is also the lodging home for the Fraser Valley Métis Association, a chartered community of Metis Nation BC (MNBC).

Event Details
The Abbotsford Farm & Country Market was established in 2003 and is operated by the non-profit Abbotsford Farm & Country Market Society.
It combines the best of a modern market experience with a traditional “make, bake, or grow” principle for its juried vendors. As a result, the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market showcases the best in locally grown and produced products along with the creative talents of both artisans and entertainers.
The majority of vendors are growers and food producers from the Abbotsford area. Agri-related businesses generate more than one third of Abbotsford’s economic activity and are responsible for 20% of all local jobs.
Buying local food contributes to a healthier environment by sustaining oxygen producing plants, and reducing greenhouse gases from packaging and long-distance transportation. In addition, local food is fresher, naturally ripened and therefore a healthier choice for you and your family.
By shopping at the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market, you are supporting the health of your loved ones, the environment, and the local economy; and are helping to sustain the availability of local food for future generations.
Learn more about local agriculture and local food by meeting local farmers and food producers at the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market each week.

The Power of Gratitude: TEDxAbbotsford 2024
This year, TEDxAbbotsford invites you to explore “The Power of Gratitude.” Our 2024 theme delves into the transformative impact of gratitude, a concept cherished by philosophers and celebrated by scientists alike. Gratitude is more than a polite expression—it’s a powerful force that can reshape our perspectives, enhance our relationships, and foster resilience. Groundbreaking research shows that cultivating gratitude can lead to improved mental health, increased happiness, and even physical well-being. At TEDxAbbotsford, we’ll uncover how this simple yet profound practice can ignite change in our lives and our communities. Join us for an inspiring day of talks that will challenge you to rethink the role of gratitude in your own life and in the world around you. Embrace the power of gratitude with us, and discover how a grateful heart can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life.

Not Technically a Christmas Movie Trivia Alert!
Alright, listen up, festive fanatics and yuletide rebels—we’re about to break some holiday traditions! Think you’ve got the popcorn munching, couch lounging movie knowledge to distinguish a Christmas movie from a movie with, like, one Christmas scene or just like Christmas vibes?
Join us at OYB Abby on Monday for “Not a Christmas Movie Trivia!” It’s the only place where Mean Girls and Die Hard walk hand in hand (through the snow, obviously) and Harry Potter gets merrily mistaken for holiday magic.
Don’t get caught quoting Christmas movies at the wrong trivia night—this is for those who like their festivities with a side of sass and a sprinkle of “Wait, that’s not a Christmas movie!”
Bring your best team names and prepare to settle the debate once and for all. Because nothing says holiday spirit like showing off your non-Christmas movie expertise!
Registration starts at 5 pm with trivia starting at 6pm, so gather your team, grab your thinking caps, and head on down! Whether you’re a walking encyclopedia or a bit of a trivia newbie – everyone is sure to have a good time!

150 years ago BC politicians and settlers conveniently told themselves that Indigenous people were a vanishing race. They rationalized that there was no need to negotiate treaties or to account for Indigenous rights BC’s long-term planning. This has created today’s ‘conundrum of double permeance’ – both Indigenous and settler societies are here to stay, but none of BC’s governing or resource managing systems were designed to account for Indigenous title and rights. In this presentation Prof. Carlson provides an overview of the process through which BC’s settler colonial systems were developed and discusses the ways in which settler colonialism (predicated on displacing Indigenous people from their lands and resources) has sustained itself. Carlson will also provide helpful definitions of key concepts and specific examples from history to help us all think of ways to contribute meaningfully to the process of transcending settler colonialism and to the building a genuinely respectful new relationship between Indigenous and settler societies.
Peace and Reconciliation Center (PARC) at UFV and The Reach have partnered on this talk to build on the community learning goals of the Stetís ímexstowx: Walk Besides Us gathering.

Event Details
Place(re)naming contributes directly to the settler colonial process of Indigenous erasure and displacement. It is part of the politics of forgetting and un-remembering. Renaming is, therefore, a means by which settlers contribute to the elimination of the intangible (largely oral) evidence of Indigenous presence. In this way settler renaming transforms the Indigenous ‘unknown’ into the settler ‘known’ and so creates something ‘new’ that can be understood, regulated, and controlled. In this presentation Prof. Carlson looks at some of the ways that re-settler naming has occurred and reviews some of the risks and opportunities associated with re-indigenizing and decolonizing the names of BC.
