Girls on Blades: Try Olympic Speed Skating
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to try an Olympic sport?
Matsqui Blades Speed Skating Association is excited to offer Girls on Blades, a free introductory speed skating program designed specifically for girls and women of all ages and experience levels.
This fun, supportive program removes common barriers to sport participation by providing free ice time, coaching, and loaner equipment. No previous speed skating experience is required — participants can try the sport in their own skates or club-provided equipment.
What to Expect
Participants will be introduced to the basics of speed skating in a safe and encouraging environment, led by NCCP-trained coaches. Sessions focus on:
-
Learning fundamental speed skating skills
-
Building confidence and physical literacy
-
Experiencing a new Olympic sport in a fun, non-competitive setting
Who Is This Program For?
-
Girls and women of all ages
-
Beginners and first-time speed skaters
-
Anyone curious about trying a new sport
No prior speed skating experience is needed.
Why This Program?
Girls and women often face barriers such as cost, lack of access, or limited exposure to certain sports. This program is made possible through grant funding to ensure no cost is a barrier to participation. Our goal is to create a positive first experience and provide clear pathways into ongoing sport opportunities.
What Happens Next?
Participants who enjoy the program will be invited to continue skating through Matsqui Blades’ ongoing Learn to Skate and club programs. Loaner equipment will remain available to help reduce start-up costs for new families.
Community Outreach
The program is promoted through local schools, community centres, and club networks to reach participants who may not otherwise have access to organized sport opportunities.
Cost
FREE — thanks to funding support from the Community Sport Development Fund.
Register here and we will contact you to arrange which days work for you to come:

Event Details
Canada and the United States have immense powers over people and legal rights. Yet they are not the first or only nations in these lands.
What do we really know about the history of the 49th parallel? How was it visualized and carved into the landscape over a century and a half ago? What perspectives are lost when we look at the boundary line from only two sides?
In the mid-nineteenth century, U.S. expansionist ambitions came into conflict with British territorial claims, represented by Hudson’s Bay Company trading posts scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest. Diplomatic negotiations led to the creation of the international boundary along the 49th parallel. The western end of the border was a geopolitical invention by British and U.S. officials, engineers, and surveyors working in Indigenous territories, which have their own sovereign boundaries.
This landmark exhibition brings together for the first time historic photographs, watercolours, and maps made by the boundary surveyors who drew a line from the Salish Sea to the Rocky Mountains between 1857 and 1862. Parallax is a collaboratively curated project that puts these nineteenth-century archival materials into dialogue with ambitious sculptures, photographs, installations, and new media works made by contemporary artists.
Together, these creative contributions explore the communities, cultural connections, and ecosystems that were here before, and persist today, despite the boundary line’s impact on lands, waters, and collective imaginations. Offering multiple perspectives on this legacy, Parallax asks us to adjust our vision of the 49th parallel.

Buzz Brass, based in Quebec, has been one of Canada’s leading brass quintets since their formation in 2002. With a repertoire that features original arrangements, Buzz Brass blends classical music and a variety of other musical styles to present programs that appeal to a wide audience. The ensemble has performed in North America, Europe, and China. They have eight recordings to their credit.
Buzz Brass will perform a program entitled Famous Inspirations. You will hear masterpieces from the turn of the twentieth century brought to life with a new voice and new arrangements. Listen to a string quartet played with the bright tones of the brass. Compare the percussive notes of Debussy’s or Satie’s piano music transformed by their mellow flowing lines.
Program Includes:
Ravel: String Quartet in F major
Debussy: The Girl With the Flaxen Hair
Jorgensen: Brass Quintet in A flat major
Dvorak: String Quartet No. 12 in F major
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
Satie: Gymnopédies
Pollack: That’s a Plenty
Bach: My Spirit Be Joyful
Piazzolla: Milonga del Angel
