Girls on Blades: Try Olympic Speed Skating

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to try an Olympic sport?
Matsqui Blades Speed Skating Association is excited to offer Girls on Blades, a free introductory speed skating program designed specifically for girls and women of all ages and experience levels.

This fun, supportive program removes common barriers to sport participation by providing free ice time, coaching, and loaner equipment. No previous speed skating experience is required — participants can try the sport in their own skates or club-provided equipment.

What to Expect

Participants will be introduced to the basics of speed skating in a safe and encouraging environment, led by NCCP-trained coaches. Sessions focus on:

• Learning fundamental speed skating skills

• Building confidence and physical literacy

• Experiencing a new Olympic sport in a fun, non-competitive setting

Who Is This Program For?

• Girls and women of all ages

• Beginners and first-time speed skaters

• Anyone curious about trying a new sport
  No prior speed skating experience is needed.

Why This Program?

Girls and women often face barriers such as cost, lack of access, or limited exposure to certain sports. This program is made possible through grant funding to ensure no cost is a barrier to participation. Our goal is to create a positive first experience and provide clear pathways into ongoing sport opportunities.

What Happens Next?

Participants who enjoy the program will be invited to continue skating through Matsqui Blades’ ongoing Learn to Skate and club programs. Loaner equipment will remain available to help reduce start-up costs for new families.

Community Outreach

The program is promoted through local schools, community centres, and club networks to reach participants who may not otherwise have access to organized sport opportunities.

Visit our exhibitions with the opportunity to sketch the artwork. A perfect activity for any skill level and a chance to see the artwork from a different perspective. Grab drawing materials from the front desk before heading into the gallery space to try your hand at the tradition of sketching original artwork in a gallery! Youth Night is a non-competitive, co-ed recreation program for all youth ages 12-16. The main purpose of Youth Night is to encourage youth to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle through exercise and play. Our Youth Nights provide youth with the opportunity to try new sports and activities in a fun atmosphere with no pressure to perform. No skill is required, just the willingness to try.

Each Youth Night program includes 8 weeks of fun activities around the city of Abbotsford for youth ages 12-16. Depending on the course, activities may include laser tag, mini golf, martial arts, and much more!

FOCUS is our program that offers a set of workshops that focuses on equipping young people with tools to help them navigate and understand mental health. Each session includes activities and discussions which will help young people understand more about their own mental health and resilience. These sessions will equip them with tools that they can use to support themselves and others.

Buzz Brass, based in Quebec, has been one of Canada’s leading brass quintets since their formation in 2002. With a repertoire that features original arrangements, Buzz Brass blends classical music and a variety of other musical styles to present programs that appeal to a wide audience. The ensemble has performed in North America, Europe, and China. They have eight recordings to their credit.

Buzz Brass will perform a program entitled Famous Inspirations. You will hear masterpieces from the turn of the twentieth century brought to life with a new voice and new arrangements. Listen to a string quartet played with the bright tones of the brass. Compare the percussive notes of Debussy’s or Satie’s piano music transformed by their mellow flowing lines.
